AZZARA
MUSIC BLOG
About:
Years ago, in an interview I was asked 'What was the best show you've ever played?' I replied, 'The one in my basement'. This blog is an effort to catch the spontaneous birth of a song. Posted here are MP3s of practices and other assorted demos involving Sarah and myself. American music at it's most raw and unchallenged.

WWJK (slow version) - Sarah Azzara
    Notes:
The Sarah Azzara band is playing at the Velvet Lounge as part of the a singer/songwriter showcase put together by Rose.

We have decided to play a more laid back set to really hit home the versatility of Sarah's songs. Here is WWJK that is normally played as a rocker slowed down to a more bluesy drawl.

Hope to see you at the show which features, Rose, Laura Tsaggaris and Stella Schindler.
    Personnel:
Sarah Azzara, guitar/vox; Ben Azzara, drums; Barry Bocaner, bass; Paul Miller, guitar. Song written by Sarah Azzara.

    All War - Pup Tent
    Notes:
Look out New York & New Haven, Pup Tent is coming to town.
    • June 3, 2007 : The Bar : 254 Crown St : New Haven : Conn.
    • June 2, 2007 8:30pm sharp : Don Hill's : 511 Greenwich St. at Spring St. : New York City : NY
Here is a new Phil song, All War. I really like the dichotomy of the parts and the kick-ass opening riff. Phil again channeling the best of Wire and Hendrix. The recording is a little over-driven and the performance a little rusty but the song still cuts through.
    Personnel:
Phil Duarte, guitar/vox; Ben Azzara, drums; Ted Watts, bass/bg-vox. Song written by Phil.

    Olson - Edie Sedgwick
    Notes:
May was easily more crazy than April. Just barely catching up now. I have new tracks from all my bands to share.

I had the distinct pleasure of performing with the great Edie Sedgwick. She had just returned from a long tour and wanted to do something special for the hometown crowd. So we converted several songs from the normal electronica state to a live band experience.

Wow what a challenge, but I think in the end it was very successful. Adrenaline kept the music going but as per usual it was Edie herself that was the whole show.

Here's a tasty slice of an early rehearsal. You can hear us discuss the arrangement as we go along.
    Personnel:
Justin Moyer, vox; Ben Azzara, drums; Melissa Quinley - bass/vocals, Jason Hutto, keyboards. Song written by Justin Moyer.

    Human Resourceful - Pup Tent
    Notes:
Tonight starts Pup Tent's residency at ARTOMATIC 2007 this year. We are playing three shows; tonight, on the Electric Stage April 27, an early 4pm show on May 6 and the closing night craziness on May 19.

We have been in a flurry of writing. Featured here is my new favorite Ted song, Human Resourceful. It has been stuck in my head all week. A good thing since I'm playing it tonight.
    Personnel:
Phil Duarte, guitar/vox; Ben Azzara, drums; Ted Watts, bass/bg-vox. Song written by Ted Watts.

Live at WFMU - The Caution Curves
    Notes:
Wow what a crazy month April has been! Every band that I play with has had a shows this month and more--Sean McArdle, Sarah Azzara, The Caution Curves, Pup Tent, DCIC, Stella Schindler and so on. I am over flowing with recorded material to share, which I'll measure out as I have time. May is also shaping up to be busy.

Here is the performance from WFMU of The Caution Curves recorded on my H4, sorry it's really huge so give it a sec to download. I am just loving the H4 and I have a great DCIC show to share later too. The Curves did a funny little interview at the end that you can hear at the WFMU site.

The Caution Curves had a great time in NY ,and thanks to WFMU, and Derek Morton for the crash and Todd P for the show. Hope to come back soon.

The next The Caution Curves show will be at Arto'Matic on May 18th!
    Personnel:
Tristana Fiscella, guitar/vocals; Rebecca Mills, laptop/horns/vocals; Ben Azzara, drums and percussion

The Bogside Man/Velvet Monkey Theme - Demon Fling
    Notes:
Here is the complete performance of Demon Fling at the Red and the Black from March 15. Thanks to Rebecca from The Caution Curves for the great recording she made on her H4.

We only played two songs, The Bogside Man and the Velvet Monkey Theme. It was a fun last minute show for me and literally it was the second time ever playing with them.
    Personnel:
Don Fleming: guitar/vox, Chris Grier: guitar, Ben Azzara: drums

As Madeleine's Wooden Horse - Daniel Barbiero duet with Ben Azzara
    Notes:
Back in November Daniel Barbiero from the DC Improvisers Collective had some ideas for duets and he dropped by the house and we recorded an hour or so of music.

This is a nice little improv where I utilize a triangle on the snare drum. It's gives it a rhythmic intensity that resolves nicely when the snare kicks in and reveals the bass atmosphere that Dan is laying down.

Check out the website I built for Dan for more from this session and more »
    Personnel:
Daniel Barbiero, bass; Ben Azzara, drums and percussion

Hallelujah Chorus - The Caution Curves
    Notes:
What a busy week it has been! I've had multiple rehearsals with Sean McArdle and The Caution Curves whom both have shows this week. The dichotomy in genres and stlyes has been invigorating.

The track "Hallelujah Chorus" featured here is a free improv from a Curves practice earlier this month. Rebecca had a new sample she wanted to try out and Tristana wanted me to just "play to it". I love Rebecca's sample choices and jumped in without hesitation. You can hear periodcally Tristana cheering us on.

The Caution Curves are playing this Friday at the Rock and Roll Hotel opening up for Dalek and Destructo Swarmbots. We have new songs and new versions of others, so if need a good mind-blowing, do drop on by.
    Personnel:
Tristana Fiscella, guitar/vocals; Rebecca Mills, laptop/horns/vocals; Ben Azzara, drums and percussion

Here is a DCIC track from our last Warehouse show. The full show has been uploaded to our Vault.

Don't miss this coming Friday, Feburary 23rd show for the record release show at Crooked Beat in Adams Morgan (2318 18th St NW Washington DC). It should be a fun cozy set and a chance to get our latest release.
